Abstract
The present experiment was designed to investigate the effects of aminoglycoside antibiotics on the reticuloendothelial phagocytic function in vivo. The phagocytic activity was assessed by means of carbon clearance method following intramuscular injecction of streptomycin (10mg/100g of body weight/day) and gentamicin(1.5mg/100g of body weight/day) to rats.
The following results were obtained :
1. In the streptomycin treated group, phagocytic activity was decreased significantly compared with that of normal and control group treated with physiologic saline. However, there was not any significant differences between the subgroups according to duration of treatment, namely 1, 3 and 7 days, respectively.
2. In the gentamicin treated group, phagocytic activity was also decreased significantly compared with that of normal and control group. However, there wasn¢¥t any significant differences between the subgroups.
3. The phagocytic activity in streptomycin treated group was somewhat more decreased than gentamicin treated group. The difference, however, was not significant statistically.
4. These experimental results exhibit carefulness of administration of aminoglycoside antibiotics to individuals with, impaired defense mechanisms.
